Geobag Dewatering

Geobags are also known as dewatering bags, geotextile tubes, geocontainers, soil tubes, geosynthetic tubes or desludging bags. They are made of high strength polypropylene woven geotextile that resists ultraviolet, environment rotting and damage, biological degradation. They are inert to most naturally encountered chemicals, alkalis, and acids.

Historically, it has been used to contain sandy soils to permit their use as flexible, erosion resistance, mass gravity structures in hydraulic and marine applications.

More recently, geobag has been used of disposing and dewatering various waste streams and contaminated sediments.

Geotextile Tube Revetment

Geotextile tube often filled with sand slurry for used as revetment structures. They are used for both submerged and exposed revetments. For submerged revetments the geobag is always covered by local soil. For exposed revetments, the geobag is exposed throughout it’s design life. To prevent erosion of the foundation, the geobag is always to install a scour apron, which is anchored by a small geotextile tube, we call it ‘anchor tube’. Revetments are also constructed using multiple geo tube layers. Here the geobags are stacked over to reach the required design heights.

Geotextile tubes are used for offshore breakwaters to prevent the erosion behind shoreline developments. The geotextile tube is located at a certain distance from offshore in order to weak or eliminate wave energy before they can reach the shoreline.

Geocontainers are used for protection dykes, where they prevent flood and storm damage to valuable structures. They can also used for river, lake works. When geobag protection dykes are constructed, always it is covered by local soil. Thereby ensuring no damage caused by activities and long term sunlight exposure. Once geobags are used for river or lake works, it is always leave them exposed except for major structures, where rock armour layers may be placed over it to dissipate hydraulic forces.

Most municipal sewage treatment plants store the generated sludge in ponds. Geobags are used extensively for dewatering sludge from these containment ponds. The effluent water is normally back to the ponds, and solids disposed of elsewhere. For the limited space available, many customers use small size geobag, which can put into ‘rectangle steel box’ and can be easy moved by truck. It is also called MDS dewatering system.

Small tailings, which are close to population or environmentally sensitive areas. In many cases the tailings have to be dewatered first before they can be rendered stable and inert. These sludges can be effectively managed with geobag dewatering technology.

Industrial Waste Dewatering

Many industrial processes produce waste which is stored in waste ponds on the industrial site. Over time these ponds fill with waste sludge, and have to be cleaned to continue function. A common method of these waste reclamation is to dewater the waste sludge using bggeotube dewatering from ponds and dispose of it in landfill or use it for other applications.

What is sludge dewatering bag?

What advantages of geobag over mechanical dewatering?

  • Reduce operation time by 50% at least. 
  • Reduce a lot of noice.
  • Requires approximately 25% of the polymer as mechanical processes.
  • Dewatering with geobag is not affected by weather.  
  • Avoid big capital investment in expensive equipment to rent or buy.
How clean can I get the effluent water?
 

Normally, with right polymer the effluent can meet TSS requirements. However it is especially important when dewatering contaminated materials or releasing to a fragile environment. To get very clean effluent a second treatment is sometimes required. Also, special care needs to be taken at the initial fill of the tube to prevent solids to pass through the fabric.

How does the dewatering bag work?

When pumping slurry into the dewatering tube then the water will come out through the fabric and the solids remain. Eventually the fine grain solids will accumulate a ‘filter cake’  inside the surface of geobag, together with geobag skin that performe as ‘filter sheet’ , which can let clean water out and solids remian.

What to do with the geotextile tube fabric and can it be used again?

There is no practical way to cut the dewatering tube and take out the dewatered sludge then close the tube again, so it a one time use. Also, every time the tube is pumped the fabric stretches and weakens. However, it has secondary uses as a geotextile, but do not expect any financial compensation. 

Do I need polymer for environmental geo bags dewatering?
 

A polymer is usually needed and speeds up the dewatering process, makes for clean discharge water, and saves money. As geosynthetic tubes and polymer work better, it is very desirable to return the decant water back to the mian stream.

What is the geosynthetic tubes size available?

Boatup dewatering tubes have GTVC software, it can simulator varies of sizes depending on your working site space.

How do I tell what polymer and how much to use?

This is determined by testing the slurry with polymers to choose the right one. Always need professional lab or agency.
